Phone battery draining fast? Causes and real fixes
How to read your battery health, the settings that actually move the needle, and the point where replacement beats tweaking.

Batteries are consumables: every charge cycle wears them a little. The question isn't whether your battery degrades, it's whether today's drain is age (fix: replacement), software (fix: settings) or a fault (fix: us). Here's how to tell them apart in ten minutes.
1. Check the battery's actual health
iPhone: Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. Below ~80% maximum capacity, replacement is the honest fix. Samsung: Settings → Device care → Diagnostics, or dial *#*#4636#*#* on many Androids. Numbers beat feelings here.
2. Find what's eating the charge
Settings → Battery shows per-app usage. One app dominating (often social media, navigation or a misbehaving background app) explains a sudden change. Update it, restrict its background activity, or remove it.
3. Apply the settings that actually matter
Reduce screen brightness / use auto-brightness, set screen timeout to 30s, disable always-on display, and turn off background refresh for apps you don't need live. Skip the folklore: closing every app constantly makes battery life *worse*.
4. Rule out signal drain
A phone hunting for weak signal burns battery fast. If drain spikes in one location (a farm shed, a country drive: very Bendigo problems), low reception is likely the cause, not the battery.
5. If health is low or it shuts down early, replace it
Random shutdowns at 20–30%, swelling, or sub-80% health all point one way. A battery replacement is quick, usually same-day, and transforms an otherwise good phone. Find your model via the device list for pricing.
Warning: If the screen is lifting, the case is bulging, or the phone rocks when flat on a table: stop charging it and bring it in. Swollen batteries are a fire risk and get worse, not better.
Frequently asked questions
Should I charge to 100% or stop at 80%?
Modern phones manage this well themselves (optimised charging). Don't stress about ritual charging habits; heat is the real enemy. Avoid charging in hot cars and under pillows.
Do cheap chargers ruin batteries?
Quality third-party chargers are fine; no-name $5 specials can deliver dirty power and damage charging circuits. That's a charging port repair waiting to happen. Spend $20, not $5.
How long does a battery replacement take?
Most phones: same-day, often under two hours with the part in stock, with our 1-year warranty on the work.
