Laptop hot and loud? Cooling problems explained

Every laptop gets warm. The questions that matter: is it hot doing *nothing*, has the fan noise *changed*, and is it slowing down at the same time? Heat is the thing that quietly shortens a machine's life: batteries, drives and boards all age faster cooked.
1. Check what's actually running
Open Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (Mac) and sort by CPU. One stuck process at 100% will cook a laptop on an empty desk. Quit it, restart, see if the heat follows.
2. Get it off the doona
Soft surfaces seal the intake vents. Hard flat surfaces only. If you use it on the couch a lot, a tray or stand pays for itself in component life.
3. Listen for the fan's story
Grinding or buzzing: failing fan bearing. Book it in before the fan dies entirely. Roaring constantly at idle: blocked airflow or dead thermal paste. Silent while hot: possibly a dead fan, which is urgent.
4. Look at the vents
A torch into the side/rear vents often shows a felt-like dust mat. Don't blast compressed air *into* a laptop fan (it can over-spin the bearing and pack dust deeper). That mat needs the bottom panel off.
5. Book a clean & re-paste when it's due
After 2–4 years, internal dust plus dried thermal paste means the cooling system can't move heat even when everything else is fine. A physical clean with fresh thermal paste and fan service typically drops temperatures dramatically. Same-day in most cases.
Warning: Sustained heat swells lithium batteries. If your MacBook runs hot *and* the trackpad has gotten stiff or the case doesn't sit flat: stop and bring it in. That's a swelling battery, and it needs out.

My fanless MacBook Air gets warm. Is that bad?
M-series Airs cool through the case, so warmth under load is by design. Concern starts when it's hot at idle or throttles during light work; that usually means runaway software, not hardware.
Does heat actually damage anything?
Long-term, yes: batteries degrade faster, fans wear out, drives fail earlier and solder joints fatigue. Cooling service is cheap insurance for an expensive machine.
Can I just use a cooling pad?
It masks the symptom. If a laptop needs a cooling pad now but didn't last year, the inside needs attention. The pad just delays the appointment.
