Laptop running slow? What actually helps

Skip the registry cleaners. The real causes of a slow laptop (startup load, full drives, old hard disks) and the fixes that work.

'Slow' has about five real causes, and none of them are fixed by the cleaner apps the internet keeps selling. Work down this list in order: it goes from free to cheap to 'worth a conversation', and the last two are where we can turn a five-year-old machine back into a quick one.

1. Restart properly and update

Not sleep: an actual restart, then let pending system updates finish. Weeks of uptime plus a half-installed update is the most common 'suddenly slow' cause, and it's free to fix.

2. Cut the startup load

Windows: Task Manager → Startup apps. Disable everything you don't need at boot (updaters, assistants, that printer tray app). Mac: System Settings → General → Login Items. Ten apps fighting to launch at boot will make any machine feel old.

3. Give the drive room to breathe

A system drive above ~90% full slows everything down. Empty Downloads, clear the bin, offload old video files to your backup drive. Aim for at least 15–20% free.

4. Check for thermal throttling

If it's slow *and* the fans are loud or the case is hot, the machine may be protecting itself by slowing down. Blocked vents and dried thermal paste are mechanical problems with mechanical fixes.

5. If it has a spinning hard drive, that's the answer

Many pre-2020 laptops shipped with mechanical hard drives. An SSD upgrade is the single biggest speed fix that exists. Boot times drop from minutes to seconds. We clone your system to an SSD with everything intact, usually same-day.

6. Still heavy with many tabs open? Add RAM

8GB is the modern floor; heavy browser use eats it. If your machine takes upgrades, a RAM bump is cheap and noticeable. We'll tell you honestly if your model can't be upgraded.

Frequently asked questions

Could it be a virus?

Sometimes, especially with pop-ups, browser redirects or a machine that's slow *only* online. We do virus removal in-house, and it's worth ruling out before hardware spend.

Is it worth upgrading a 7-year-old laptop?

Honest answer: sometimes. An SSD + RAM into a solid older machine beats a new budget laptop. But if the screen, battery and hinges are also tired, we'll tell you to put the money toward a replacement instead. The same repair or replace thinking applies to laptops too.

Do those PC cleaner apps help?

No. Most do nothing useful and several make things worse or charge subscriptions for the privilege. The fixes above cover what they pretend to do.
