Replace your iPhone battery when Maximum Capacity drops below about 80%, or sooner if the phone shuts down unexpectedly, gets hot on light use, or won't last a working day. A battery replacement is a same-day job in most cases, and it is almost always cheaper than replacing the phone.
Battery replacement is the second most common repair we do at our Bendigo workshop. It is also the one people put off longest, usually because they assume a tired battery means a tired phone. Often it doesn't. A four-year-old iPhone with a fresh battery behaves remarkably like a new one.
Here's how to work out whether yours is the battery, and what the job involves.
1. Find your real battery health number
Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging → Maximum Capacity. This is the percentage of the original capacity the battery can still hold. A new iPhone reads 100%. Apple considers a battery consumed at 80%, which typically arrives somewhere around 500 full charge cycles (double that on the iPhone 15 and newer). For most people, that's two to three years.
2. Know what the numbers mean in practice
Above 90%: healthy, leave it alone. 85-90%: normal ageing, you may notice shorter afternoons. 80-85%: the point where most people start feeling it, worth replacing if the phone is otherwise good. Below 80%: iOS may begin managing peak performance to prevent shutdowns, which shows up as general sluggishness. That throttling is reversible, it goes away with a new battery.
3. Check whether it's actually the battery
Battery faults have a signature: sudden drops (100% to 40% in a jump), shutdowns with charge still showing, heat during light use, or the phone dying in the cold. If instead the phone is slow but the battery drains normally, the cause is more likely software or storage. Try freeing up storage first. If it won't charge at all, that's usually the port, not the battery: start here.
4. Try the free fixes first
Before spending anything, rule out a rogue app. Settings → Battery shows usage by app over 24 hours and 10 days. An app burning 30% in the background is a settings problem, not a hardware one. Turn off Background App Refresh for the offenders, update iOS, and give it a couple of days. Our battery drain guide walks through the settings that genuinely move the needle, and the ones that don't.
5. Understand how the price is built
We price every repair as parts plus labour, and we don't bill hourly for in-store work. Battery replacement on a phone or tablet sits in our standard small-device labour tier, and the battery itself is quoted separately because part costs move with supply. You'll get the full figure confirmed before we start. See transparent pricing for the labour tiers in full. Assessment is free either way.
6. Weigh it against a new phone
The honest test: if the screen is good, the cameras work and the phone still gets iOS updates, a battery replacement buys you years for a fraction of a new handset. If the phone is also cracked, on its last supported iOS version, and slow with a healthy battery, put the money toward a replacement instead. We'll tell you which one you're looking at, including when the answer is "don't spend the money".
Warning: If the screen is lifting away from the frame, the back has bowed, or the phone rocks on a flat table, the battery is swelling. Stop charging it, keep it out of your pocket and away from heat, and bring it in. A swollen lithium battery is a genuine fire risk and it will not settle down on its own. Don't press the screen back down.
Frequently asked questions
At what percentage should I replace my iPhone battery?
80% Maximum Capacity is the usual trigger, because that's where iOS may start managing peak performance. Plenty of people replace at 85% simply because the phone stopped lasting the day. If you're above 90% and unhappy with battery life, the cause is almost certainly settings or an app rather than the cell.
How long does an iPhone battery replacement take?
Usually same day, and often under an hour at the bench when we have the battery in stock. Walk-ins are welcome and assessment is free.
Will I lose my data during a battery replacement?
No. It's a hardware job and we don't wipe devices without asking. We still recommend a current backup before any repair, as a matter of course. Our iPhone backup guide takes about ten minutes.
Does replacing the battery fix a slow iPhone?
If the slowness is caused by iOS throttling a worn battery, yes, and the improvement is immediate and obvious. If the battery is healthy and the phone is still slow, the cause is storage, software or an app, and a new battery won't touch it. We check which one it is before recommending the repair.
Is a third-party battery as good as Apple's?
Quality varies enormously, which is why the part matters more than the price. We fit batteries we're prepared to warrant for a year, and we'll tell you what we're fitting. Note that non-Apple batteries can show a service message in Settings on recent models. That's a parts-verification notice, not a fault.
What does an iPhone battery replacement cost in Bendigo?
At Geekly it's parts plus labour, with no hourly billing for in-store repairs. Labour for a standard phone battery sits in our small-device tier and the battery is quoted on top, because part prices move. Bring the phone in or call us and you'll get the exact figure for your model up front, before any work starts.
