iPhone storage full? Free up space without losing anything
What's actually eating your iPhone storage, the built-in tools that fix it, and how to do it without deleting memories.

'Storage full' arrives at the worst moment: mid-photo, mid-update, mid-holiday. The fix is rarely deleting your photos; it's understanding the three things that actually fill iPhones: video, Messages attachments and app caches. Ten minutes here usually recovers gigabytes.
1. See the real breakdown
Settings → General → iPhone Storage. The coloured bar shows what's using space, and the list below ranks apps by size. The recommendations at the top of this screen are genuinely good; start with what it suggests.
2. Offload, don't delete, big apps
In the same screen, tap a big app → Offload App. The app is removed but its data and icon stay. Tap the icon and it reinstalls exactly as it was. Perfect for games and one-trip airline apps.
3. Tame Messages
Messages quietly hoards years of photos and videos. Settings → Apps → Messages → Keep Messages → 1 Year (or 30 days), and in iPhone Storage → Messages, review the large-attachment list. People recover whole gigabytes here.
4. Let Photos optimise (with a backup in place)
Settings → Photos → Optimise iPhone Storage keeps small versions on the phone and full originals in iCloud. Only do this with iCloud Photos active and healthy. Confirm via the iPhone backup guide so originals genuinely exist somewhere else.
5. Clear the duplicates and screen recordings
Photos → Albums → Utilities has a Duplicates merge tool. Sort your videos by size (Albums → Media Types → Videos); three old screen recordings can outweigh a thousand photos.

Offloading apps never touches photos. Photo optimisation keeps originals in iCloud. It's safe *if* iCloud Photos is on and syncing, which is why we say check the backup first.
