Cracked screen: make it safe until it's fixed

A cracked screen is rarely an emergency, but it is a countdown. Cracks spread with heat, pressure and pocket-flex, and a damaged screen is one drop away from a dead touch layer. Here's how to hold it together until the swap, and what to weigh up when choosing the replacement.
1. Back up before anything else
While the touchscreen still works, back the phone up. If the touch layer dies completely, getting data off becomes a much bigger job than a screen swap.
2. Tape or film over loose glass
A screen protector over the cracks (or clear packing tape in a pinch) keeps glass splinters out of your fingers and dust out of the display. It also keeps the crack from catching on pockets and spreading.
3. Avoid heat and pressure
Don't leave it on a car dash, don't wireless-charge if the back is also cracked (heat), and keep it out of tight back pockets. Cracks grow along stress lines.
4. Watch for the warning signs of worse
Green/pink lines, flickering, dead zones, or ink-blot patches mean the OLED underneath is failing. Book sooner rather than later, because a failing panel can quit entirely without warning.
5. Choose the right replacement grade

Frequently asked questions
Will the crack spread if I just leave it?
Usually yes, eventually. Heat cycles and flex do it even without another drop. A small corner crack can sit stable for months; a crack across the display rarely does.
How long does a screen replacement take?
