A repair shop with no front desk.

Michael Lancaster opened Geekly in 2020 because getting a device fixed in Bendigo meant handing it over a counter and hoping. So he built the opposite. One open room, a long timber bench, and a technician who sits down beside you and shows you what is wrong.

The gap was never the repair. It was the room.

By 2020 there was no shortage of places that could replace a screen. What Bendigo did not have was a place that would explain it to you.

Every shop worked the same way. A counter, a docket, a wall, and a device that disappeared into a back room for a few days. You handed over something you rely on every hour of your life, and you got a phone call when it was done. Maybe.

Over the last ten years Michael has watched the gaps in this industry open up one by one, and has spent that time filling them. People were not asking to be sold to. They wanted to understand what had happened, whether the thing was worth fixing, and what it would honestly cost.

That question does not get answered across a counter. It gets answered sitting down, with the device open in front of both of you.

Built like good hospitality. Equipped like a workshop.

Two things had to be true at once. It had to be a serious workshop, with the tools for board-level work. It also had to be a room you would happily stand around in.

So the counter went. In its place there is a long timber bench that runs through the middle of the room, with the technicians on one side and nothing at all on the other. Walk in and someone looks up. That is the whole greeting.

The workshop is not out the back. It is the room you are standing in. You can watch a screen come off, you can ask what the part is, and you can see the shop working while you wait.

  • No front desk. There is no counter to queue at and nobody to get past first. You walk in, a technician looks up from the bench, and the conversation starts there.
  • One open room. Every repair happens at 37 Williamson Street, in front of you. Nothing is hidden behind a door and nothing is posted off to a third party, including the hard ones.
  • A bench you can lean on. If you want the fault explained, we will open the device and show you on the spot. If you would rather just drop it and go, that is fine too.
  • Time for the long question. Some people want it fixed by lunch. Some want to learn how to back up their photos properly. Both are a good reason to come in, and neither one is a nuisance.

Three benches. Three specialists.

Nobody here is a generalist. Each technician owns a bench, and your device goes to the person who has met that fault the most times.

Apple, Android, computer. Different person, same standard. It is the reason a logic-board fault does not get quoted by someone whose day is screens, and the reason the deep diagnostic jobs other shops send away simply stay here.

It also means the technician who diagnosed your device is the one who repairs it. Nothing gets lost in the handover, because there is no handover.

  • Michael Lancaster — Owner & Operator. Geekly's founder, with nearly a decade in tech. He's run the business since 2020 and keeps the whole operation running day to day.
  • Angus Smith — Lead Apple Technician. Ten years working for Apple. Now runs Geekly's Mac and computer bench, from logic boards to data recovery.
  • Daniel Hewitt — Lead Smart Device Technician. More than 20 years in IT. Daniel leads the smart-device bench and knows phones, tablets and watches like the back of his hand.

Why the specialist bench gets a better result.

  • One person, start to finish. The technician who diagnosed your device is the one who repairs it and the one who hands it back. Nothing is lost in translation, because there is nobody in between.
  • Nothing leaves the building. Every repair happens at 37 Williamson Street, including the board-level work and data recovery that most shops post away. If we take it on, we do it here.
  • A year of warranty behind it. One-year warranty on every repair, covering our work and the parts we installed. That sits on top of your rights under Australian Consumer Law, never in place of them.

Have a look for yourself.

You do not need a booking and you do not need a reason. If you are in the CBD, put your head in and see what a repair shop with nothing to hide looks like.
